During the month of February, the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico celebrates Carnival. This is a happy time for both locals and visitors. Colors, music and joy are the protagonists in this great party. 

Playa del Carmen is the jumping-off point for getting to every part of the Yucatan, because is located in the center of the Mayan Riviera (on the Caribbean coast of Mexico).

The hotels in Playa del Carmen are transformed into places for get-togethers and games. Meanwhile, the climate during this season is perfect - after a day in the fabulous celestial waters of the Caribbean Sea, there is nothing else to do except to finish up the evening with partying and dancing.

The chefs in the Mexican restaurants (as well as the international restaurants) are creating a cornucopia of colors and unique tastes. The drinks served at the café tables are decorated with cute, funny masks and little hats.

A few weeks before the Carnival in the Mayan Riviera, Mexicans begin to prepare for the great party. In Playa del Carmen, people disguise themselves, dance and sing in the streets.
During February, people build huge bonfires in the centers of the main squares of Mexico that symbolically burn away bad moods and ugly thoughts.

Children march along in the parade under a brilliant evening sky sparkling with fireworks that are reflected in the waters of the Caribbean Sea. There are magnificent shows on the beaches in Playa del Carmen with excellent ballet dancers, and the kings and queens of the carnival spread smiles and joy to everyone.

The nightclubs in Playa del Carmen organize masked balls and beach events; they create a breathtaking ambiance with candles, Latin, reggae and lounge music. "Los Bailarines del Fuego", as the “Fire Dancers” are called in Mexico, hypnotize the crowds with sensational shows, transport them musically and create alluring scenes.

The light breezes caressing your face, the pleasure of sipping a cool drink while stretched out on a comfortable hammock… this pleasant melody will accompany your memories of this beautiful Playa del Carmen vacation.

Dance numbers, ballets, colors and costumes are the soul and the attraction of the moment.

The Yucatecan culture (we can almost say Mayan Culture) is at an all-time high during the evenings. The aluxes, la X-Tabay and the Hauy Chivo play and tease the parade participants as they dance the jarana in their huipiles. Aluxes are Mayan dwarfs and the X-Tabay are beautiful Mayan spirits that lure men to their death.

Merida's Carnival is a huge party too, just a short distance from Playa del Carmen, where you can discover the local Mayan culture and traditions.

The Carnival in Merida is one of the five most important festivals in all of Mexico and Latin America. So is the Cozumel Carnival (only a 30-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen).
