Located just south of Tulum, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a large protected area of over 200,000 acres and more than 65 miles of the Great Mayan Barrier Reef.

There are many different ecosystems in Sian Ka'an: semi-evergreen tropical forest, wetlands, savanna and ocean, as well as an abundance of wildlife such as jaguars, pumas, ocelots, margays, jaguarundis, howler monkeys, crocodiles, and over 345 species of birds that makes it particularly good for bird watching.
